Looking for a Wedding Florist? I found one...

Posted by jachacosmetics

I don't know about all the other Huron Perth Brides out there, but you can pin all day on Pinterest, but finding a vendor  with linens and floral ideas to make your boards come to life, is a different story.

Well I will have you know, although I did pin endless amounts of floral arrangements on pinterest, these pictures are from the blog of http://www.villagevinesflorists.com/ .  From the minute I walked into their store in Exeter, Ontario I was in love.   I honestly was getting so frustrated with trying to find linens, and center pieces and flowers, because I didn't want your traditional bridal set up.  But Natalie, is truly amazing.  I sat down with my pinterest board (she had already had most of them pinned) and actually had most of the looks set up in her studio.   During our meeting, dollar signs kept running thought my head, Natalie had so many amazing ideas, and I was super excited, but didn't want to get set up for disappointment when I got the quote.  I assumed for all of her wonderful ideas, my budget was not going to cut it! Well, when I got the quote I was pleasantly surprised and I booked her immediately.

I am the type of person, who feels I can do everything myself, and had been debating whether I needed someone to do the tent and ceremony setup the day of the wedding.  Doing my own DIY projects are very important to me, and I didn't think I would be able to give the control of my decor to someone else.  I explained what I was planning on making myself, and Natalie even gave suggestions on how I can do these projects and respected my decision to have DIY projects.  After meeting Natalie, I know that I trust her completely to make sure things go smoothly the day of the wedding, and have booked her to be onsite.  Instead of being a bridzilla stress case, I am now going to sit back and get pampered the day of the wedding(well I promise to try my hardest).

When I sent Natalie my deposit, I felt a huge relief come over me,  not only had I found the most beautiful lines( I was very anti linens before I saw her collections), the most amazing center pieces and natural looking bouquets   but my head continued to spin about what else she could do!

I found some amazing hair combs on etsy that I was going to order for my bridesmaids and decided I would send her the picture and see if she could recreate them for me.  Well, not only did she recreate this picture, but she made it even better then I had hoped for.  I also decided to get them made for the MC and the readers at the wedding instead of corsages.
We are in the process of designing a wedding headband for myself, because I was so in love with the hair combs!
Last but not least, I was in search of someone to make silk flowers to be added to my dress, so I asked Natalie if she thought she would be able to do this.  Of course she said she can, and we are starting that task next week!  (please note this is not my dress, just a dramatized version of  a dress with flowers :) )

I hope you enjoyed my blog, to see the end results of the flowers, decor, linens, hair combs, headband and of course the dress...you can see it all in person on Sept.14/2013 or of course check the blog after that date to see the beautiful pictures.          http://www.villagevinesflorists.com/ photos curtisy of www.sandrareiger.com

I have been doing bridal makeup in the wedding industry for years, but now that it's my time to get married I decided to blog about the process.

The first question I am constantly getting asked, is who will do your wedding makeup?  Well I have a few artists up my sleeve, and if they can make the flight for the wedding, I just might be able to convince them to do some makeup while they are in town.   For those of you who are not makeup artists, here are a few tips on how to find a makeup artist for your big day!

1)Products:  Make sure to find out what products they use, this is very important.  You want to make sure they have all levels of foundation coverage from a tinted moisturizer to a full coverage.  Chances are your whole wedding party won't have the exact same skin conditions, so you need to make sure the artist has variety when it comes to foundation.  If you have skin sensitivities, you need to make sure you ask questions about the ingredients in the products.  Note: Hypoallergenic is just a word, and yes we all use it, but their are no guidelines as to what companies can use the word, and who can't.

2) Affordability: A red flag for me when searching for a makeup artist is the pricing, if you look at the price tag and think wow that's a deal, it's probably a deal for a reason.  I like to stick with the theory, you get what you pay for.  Keep in mind a good makeup school costs about $10,000 on average, so if someone is charging next to nothing,  I'm going to guess they either have a two week course in makeup, or they are "self taught".   No matter who you choose for hair or makeup, make sure you get a trial at least three months before hand, if you do not like the look then you can either do another trial or change artists.

That being said, the most expensive makeup artists are not always the best either.  I recently went to the Total Wedding Show in Toronto and decided that I would get a makeup trial of my own done.  I guess I expected to look like a totally different person, preferably better then I looked on a daily bases  and to be honest I think I looked like a less attractive version of myself.  Not the vision I had in mind. My skin felt heavy(not used to the MAC foundation anymore) and looked dull, not full of life and illuminated like I feel a bride should look on their wedding day.

3) Book a trial: Always book a trail for your hair and makeup, and I suggest doing a look that is a little bit out of your comfort zone.  If you always do natural makeup, try doing something a little more glamorous then you were thinking.  This way if you end up liking a look you would have never thought of trying, you are set for your wedding day.  If you don't like the look, you can just take away the aspects you didn't like.  If you book the right makeup artist, you should be able to bring along a tear sheets of looks that you would like to do.  A trained makeup artist will then be able to look at those pictures and give you exactly what you are looking for.  Keep in mind when searching for makeup pictures, you need to find examples with similar eye shapes and features, because different eye shapes call for different makeup techniques.

Last tip, book your makeup artist at least 6 months in advance, I have had to turn down four brides this week alone.  Remember,  although food is very important, it is gone within the hour, your face is being photographed in pictures for years to come, don't under estimate the importance of good makeup.

Before and Afters

I have alot of requests of before and after pictures of my work, because clients always seem to be amazed by the difference hair and makeup makes on a person. I feel that although my makeup transformations make a person feel and look amazing, my clients always still look like themselves and this is very important to me. If you are looking for an image change, or need a confidence boost, we would love to help in your transformation.

Girls Day

Posted by jachacosmetics

Last month, the girls from THREE in Guelph decided to get together and do a girls spa day for young girls in crises.  We decided to reach out to the community and get donations of makeup and styling products, and then teach the girls how to do their makeup and hair.  We also received donations of professional clothing, so these young ladies could dress the part for an interview.  When Margie from fresh images learned of our event, she decided she wanted to donate professional portraits of the girls, and joined our cause.

With all the wonderful donations and the generosity from not only the Guelph Community, but from friends and family members wanting to help, we were overwhelmed with the success of this event. Although, the girls were hesitant at first as to why complete strangers would want to help them, they ended up loving every minute of being pampered. The girls left with bags of brand new makeup and hair products, as well as some key wardrobe pieces. The girls could not thank us enough, and had an amazing time. After seeing themselves in pictures, they thought they might have a chance as super models. Hearing those comments made me feel so proud to know that spending four hours with these girls , helped to build confidence that will last a life time. Below are some pictures of the wonderful event, so that you can see the happiness your gifts gave to these girls! Thanks again for your support, it means a lot to myself and the staff at THREE.

A Wedding Day Experiment

You have finally found the partner you want to marry, you spend months looking for the perfect venue, your best girl friends are gathered to be your bridesmaids, and of course, you have found the dress of your dreams.  With all your wedding day wishes coming true, you notice your bank account dwindling fast. You do your own makeup and hair every day, and you feel you have it down to an art form, so the question is do you really want to spend the extra money to employ a professional makeup artist and hair stylist? What difference does it really make?

When a newly engaged bride recently asked me this same question, I decided to actually show her the difference a professional makes.   Even though I agreed she did a great job doing her own hair and makeup, I knew that we would be able to provide her with little tricks and techniques to make her look like the princess she wanted to be on her wedding day.

The look: The tear sheet the bride wanted to recreate for her wedding makeup was a dramatic smoky eye with a purple hue, and a beautiful red lip.  She wanted her hair to be off to the side in a soft bun.
Implementing the look:  Using her tear sheet as a reference, our bride pulled out her makeup kit and styling tools, and created the look she envisioned on her wedding day.   LaCreme provided us with a beautiful dress and accessories, and Margie at fresh images captured pictures of the overall look.   After the photographs were taken of the brides makeup application and hair styling,  I (jacha minerals) and Steph( THREE Salon and Spa in Guelph) recreated the look using the same tear sheet as the bride had brought in for reference.
The Brides Observations:
1.       Her eyebrows were filled in when the professional did her makeup and she had not done that on her own.
2.       Her skin looks a lot more healthy and bright with the professional makeup, and she felt that the makeup she did on her own washed her out.
3.       She thought that her own liner application actually made her eyes appear smaller then when she had her makeup done professionally.
4.       She noticed that her cheek bones looked more defined in the picture with her makeup done professionally.
5.       She was a bit surprised when the purple she applied on her eyes, almost came out as a soft pink when we looked at the results in the pictures.
6.       She also noticed when a professional did her hair is looked more polished and finished, and the flower was placed in a more subtle way.
Final Conclusion: Hiring someone to apply your wedding day makeup and hair will help complete your look. Even if you are great at applying your makeup and doing your hair on your own, professionals understand how to make you look your best in photographs.  She also felt that when she did her own hair and makeup she was stressed and struggled to recreate a specific look.  When she had someone else do her hair and makeup, she was much more relaxed and was confident her team of professionals would be able to achieve the look she had wanted for her wedding day.   After this experience, saving costs by not hiring professionals was no longer an option for her.  So brides, it’s your wedding day, sits back and gets the royal treatment.

Putting the Artist back in Makeup

Posted by jachacosmetics

I've been a makeup artist for over 7 years now.  No this does not mean I wasn't smart enough to go to school to be a lawyer, it means I spent 9 months in school learning all aspects of makeup.  I choose to become a makeup artist because I knew I had the talent and the drive to make it in this competitive industry.   Above is a picture of the Anatomy of the Human Skull, and I had to study this to become a professional makeup artist.  Not only do you need this information to know where to create bruising if someone is supposed to have a broken nose, or if a producer says you need a laceration on the maxilla, you need to know where that it is.  They may just tell you the mental protuberance has broke, you need to know what that would look like if your recreating it through makeup. Below are pictures of the different eye shapes that people have.  When you are a professional makeup artist it is your job to identify what eye shape your client has and how to apply shadows and liners to accentuate their features.
We also work with the contours of the face adding highlight and shadows in order to enhance different aspects of the face.  You can actually change your face shape by countering and highlighting in the right places.   A professional Makeup Artist, is meant to be an artist, and we see your face as our canvas.   Yes I understand there are some individuals out there who are taking the artist out of makeup artist, but please don't disrespect those who are keeping the art alive.
